We partnered with the Collaborative for Social and Emotional Learning to advocate for SEL education in schools across the country.
ABOUT CASEL
CASEL works in collaboration with schools, districts, and states nationwide to drive research, guide practice, and inform policy to promote social and emotional learning (SEL). Research shows that SEL programs provide better results for students through evidence in student achievement, neuroscience, health, employment, psychology, classroom management, learning theory, economics, and prevention in youth behaviors. Because of this, CASEL's mission is to make evidence-based SEL an integral part of education from preschool through high school across states and districts.
CASEL hosted an Applied Data Fellow to support the organization's missions. In one year, the Fellow analyzed over 500 data sets with unique R codes to evaluate the effectiveness of over 40 unique SEL curriculums. Analysis and promotion of the SEL curriculums helped improve the usability and positive outcomes in all 50 states.
PROJECT IMPACT
Data Analysis
After consolidating and warehousing data for CASEL, the Fellow analyzed the numbers by creating sustainable R codes. It was a varied list of projects in which the Fellow analyzed over 500 data entries. These projects improved CASEL’s ability to advocate SEL in different school systems.
Project Management
CASEL works to provide different SEL curriculums to states and districts across the country. The Fellow took over 40 curriculums in 50 states and reevaluated the effectiveness of each. They did an in-depth analysis of over 29 unique programs. Through qualitative research and marketing promotion, the Fellow helped CASEL push their curriculums to the forefront in different states.
Qualitative Research
CASEL has a broad scope of data. The Fellow worked to consolidate and warehouse the many files of data unique to CASEL’s work. The Fellow created reports in Microsoft Excel for SEL policies conducted in 20 partner districts. This helped make CASEL’s programs more accessible to more people.
All projects the Fellow worked on related back to CASEL's mission of enhancing and promoting SEL curriculums across the United States. The Fellow learned new skills in project management that gave them a stronger understanding of SEL outcomes and the use of data to further those missions. The Fellow's contributions enabled CASEL to better advocate for SEL programs in districts and states across the country.
